Dr. MLK Jr 2020: Keynote Featuring Alumnae Dr. Schetema Nealy

Dr. Schetema Nealy is a chemist, educator, and researcher. She was recently honored as an Outstanding Graduate Award recipient, and is the first African-American woman to graduate with a PhD in chemistry at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV). Her doctoral studies were focused in chemistry education and resulted in a dissertation titled "Science Identity and Underrepresented Minority STEM Organizations." In addition to her PhD, Dr. Nealy holds a Master of Science in chemistry from Caltech and a second master of science degree in analytical chemistry from the California State University at Los Angeles (CSULA). She also earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Nealy currently holds the positions of Assistant Professor and Research Coordinator at the Charles R. Drew University of Science and Medicine (CDU) where she is responsible for teaching undergraduate chemistry courses and conducting research in the Center for Biomedical Informatics as part of the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). She is also using her certification in mentorship while designing, developing, and implementing a mentorship program for the participants of the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) at CDU.
