Laura Marcus, wife of Caltech professor of theoretical chemistry and Nobel laureate Rudy Marcus, published a series of 24 articles between 1987 and 1999, which appeared in three Caltech publications: Caltech Women’s Club Bulletin, Caltech News, and On Campus. The subjects are mainly wives of faculty members and Caltech presidents, as well as an article on Professor Olga Taussky-Todd, the first female professor in Caltech history. Each article was based on oral history interviews she conducted, and she also drew on her own background research. This collection of articles shows how the men and women of Caltech created an extraordinary research community of science and engineering, whose members shared common interests and delightful social bonds. With a foreword by Harry Gray and David Tirrell, the articles are brought together in this book for the first time.
