![“You know, tonight you might see the Virgo constellation, and if you zoom in toward the head of Virgo there's actually this giant elliptical galaxy called M87, and it's 55 million light-years away. And if we could zoom in very far toward the center of M87 with the radio telescope, we would see these flailing arms of a jet, and what this jet tells us is at the heart of it there's a supermassive black hole, a place where what's too close can’t escape, not even light.

And although we haven't ever been able to see this black hole before, we see the effects of it in the jet. And what we are trying to do with the Event Horizon Telescope is see something as small as that little dot, … the core of the black hole, the immediate [area] around that black hole.”

Katie Bouman, who was part of the team that created the first-ever image of a black hole, hosted a conversation Friday at Caltech about the algorithms she and others developed to create the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration image that’s been all over the news this week.
