What's a Hot Group? The metaphor conjures up images of passionate people banding together to "stimulate the company's creative juices." Nurturing and growing this organizational phenomenon has much relevance to our work at JPL. Jean Lipman-Blumen and Hal Leavitt are experts on the subject. Their book, Hot Groups: Seeding, Feeding, and Using Them To Ignite Your Organization, has received the Association of American Publisher's award for The Best Business Book of 1999.

Professors Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt have distinguished careers in teaching, writing, consulting, and in practice. Jean Lipman-Blumen is the Thornton F. Bradshaw Professor of Public Policy at the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management, Claremont Graduate University. Her classes include crisis management, organizational power, and leadership. She has consulted for departments and agencies of the U.S. government, including the Executive Office of the President and the Departments of Labor, State, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Education.

Hal Leavitt is the Kilpatrick Professor of Organizational Behavior and Psychology Emeritus, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. He was the director of the Stanford Executive Program as well as the first director of the Stanford-NUS Executive Program in Singapore, and educational advisor to Thailand's Institute for Management Education. In addition, he taught at the London Business School and at INSEAD in France.
