Caltech Mourns the Passing of Nobel Laureate Rudy Marcus (1923–2026)

Rudolph A. (Rudy) Marcus, Caltech's John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry, passed away on July 16, 2026. The prolific chemist, who approached theory with infinite curiosity and the background of an experimentalist, was five days shy of his 103rd birthday.

Marcus was awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his theoretical work on electron transfer among molecules in chemical reactions, a concept that lies at the heart of phenomena ranging from the slow encroachments of rust to the rapid reactions of photosynthesis. In neither case do any of the atoms rearrange; only the electrons are in motion. The Marcus theory explains why electrons in various settings behave so differently.

"Rudy Marcus's career exemplified the beauty and reach of fundamental science, and he will be deeply missed by the Caltech community," says Caltech President Ray Jayawardhana, the Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and professor of astronomy. "He was a visionary scientist who transformed our understanding of chemical reactions at their most elementary level. By uncovering the elegant physical principles that govern electron transfer, he gave scientists the ability to predict and engineer one of nature's most basic processes. His pioneering work laid the conceptual foundations that continue to shape advances in clean energy, catalysis, electronics, and beyond."

Marcus, who authored more than 500 publications over a span of nearly eight decades, maintained an active research laboratory at Caltech until his death. In a statement, Marcus' family wrote that, "He greatly cherished his 48 years at Caltech, and the many brilliant and supportive colleagues, co-workers, students, and friends he made throughout his career. Full of zest for research and solving problems, he remained active in his field and was hard at work on three scientific papers at the time of his death."

Over the years, Marcus mentored and taught hundreds of students and postdoctoral scholars. He co-mentored Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships students as recently as summer 2024. Reflecting on his enjoyment of working with students, Marcus once said, "Ideas spring up when you're in contact with new experimental results, especially if you can keep an open mind and not just be focused on one thing, and students have helped me over the years to keep that in mind."

Many of those students have gone on to impressive and important chemical careers of their own. Greg Voth (PhD '87), now a distinguished service professor at the University of Chicago, says he cannot imagine what his career would have been like without Marcus's mentorship. "Rudy Marcus was the quintessential theorist," says Voth. "He reveled in working endless hours, figuring out the hidden secrets of nature. His impact on the field of chemistry and beyond is virtually impossible to quantify."

David Beratan (PhD '86), now a distinguished professor at Duke University, recalls working closely with Marcus as a graduate student in the laboratory of John Hopfield's group, then a professor of chemistry and biology at Caltech. "Rudy loved every aspect of being a scientist—the doing, of course, but also the give-and-take with like-minded people, no matter their background or career stage. He attended parties at students' homes when invited, and his door was always open to us. Peering into his office when traversing the first floor of Noyes, I saw, without fail, a scholar deeply immersed in his studies, with paper tablets, books, and journals encircling his desk." Beratan adds that "despite his formidable depth, Rudy never lost focus on the larger scientific issues at hand. He asked disarming questions, and he always pushed us to explain how our theoretical studies might be linked to something that could, in fact, be measured."

"Rudy was an inspiration," says theoretical chemist Thomas F. Miller III, CEO and co-founder of Iambic Therapeutics, who was mentored by Marcus as a young faculty member at Caltech. "I've never met anyone so purely committed to the joy of scientific understanding. I've also never met anyone who was both so instrumental in advancing his field and so accessible as a colleague and friend. I'm grateful to have known him."

Marcus was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on July 21, 1923. The only child of loving parents who had not themselves graduated from high school, Marcus attended McGill University, earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1943. He stayed on at McGill and earned his doctorate in 1946 for research in which he measured reaction rates of ions in solution.

From 1946 to 1949, as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Research Council (NRC) in Ottawa, Ontario, his work focused on investigations of reaction rates in gases. After a couple of years at the NRC, Marcus realized he was dissatisfied with experiments because they were not giving him a chance to use the mathematics he enjoyed so much. He and a friend decided to form their own two-man seminar to teach themselves theory, which Marcus found far more interesting.

At the end of his postdoctoral position at the NRC, Marcus sent letters to six leading theoreticians in chemistry in the United States. The esteemed chemist Oscar Rice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) hired him for a second postdoctoral fellowship, this time in theory. Marcus later said the switch from experiment to theory "was like a breath of fresh air."

The move to Chapel Hill turned out to be a good one for more personal reasons as well. Almost immediately after moving to North Carolina, Marcus met the love of his life, Laura Hearne, a graduate student in sociology and cultural anthropology. The two were married six months later.

Rice introduced Marcus to the Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel (RRK) theory, a model Rice and his colleagues had developed over the years to track how energy moves from bond to bond within energized molecules. In 1926, Rice and Herman C. Ramsperger had developed a back-of-the-envelope theory to explain why an unstable gas called azomethane decomposed more slowly than expected when diluted with an inert gas. Then, during a fellowship at Caltech, Rice discovered that chemist Louis S. Kassel, who was also completing a fellowship at the Institute, was doing similar work using the then-new tools of quantum mechanics. In 1927, the trio published their RRK theory, which allowed for decomposition rates of molecules to be calculated precisely enough to be verified experimentally.

Marcus combined RRK theory with so-called transition-state theory, which states that an intermediate moment exists in chemical reactions, occurring at the point when old bonds are partly broken and new ones are partly formed. In 1951, just before leaving UNC-Chapel Hill for an assistant professorship at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Marcus and Rice published the first paper describing what is now known as RRKM theory—the "M" standing for Marcus. It remains a basic tool for calculating reaction rates.

Beginning in the mid-1950s, at the Polytechnic Institute, Marcus developed what came to be known as the Marcus theory of electron transfer. Through a series of papers, he developed a mathematical model to describe the rates of electron-transfer reactions in solution, thereby solving a problem that had emerged from experimental results: why some reactions involving a simple electron transfer happen quickly while others take far longer than expected to transpire. Marcus recognized that electronic motions are much faster than those of atoms. That means that the atoms in the reacting molecules and the surrounding solvent, such as water, are effectively frozen in position when the electron transfers or jumps. Consequently, to conserve energy the atoms must already be in the right geometry before the jump.

Consider the classic example of the transfer of an electron between two types of iron ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+) in water. In general, Fe3+ ions pull water molecules in more tightly, holding them closer than Fe2+ ions do. However, the random jostling of atoms from thermal energy occasionally nudges the water molecules into a configuration that suits both the reactants and products equally well. In this case, the water molecules around Fe2+ compress slightly and those around Fe3+ relax a bit. In that fleeting moment, when the energy of an electron in either location would be the same, an electron can jump, and it does so essentially instantly. Marcus called the energy barrier—the cost to bring the surrounding atoms into that specific matching configuration—the reorganization energy and worked out a mathematical model to calculate its expected value.

In 2011, when recalling this work, Marcus said it took him just one month to produce the equation. "For the record," he said, "it was the fastest thing I've ever done before or since."

Marcus theory famously predicts that under certain circumstances, increasing the driving force, the amount of energy released when an electron gets transferred, actually causes the reaction to slow down—a phenomenon known as the Marcus inverted effect. This counterintuitive prediction has been compared to a skier finding himself gliding more slowly as the slope gets steeper. The existence of the inverted region was not experimentally confirmed until 1984. It is now considered key to the efficiency of photosynthesis. When sunlight excites an electron and separates it from its original location within the plant's photosynthetic reaction center, the inverted region can slow the electron's return to its original state, giving it more time to participate in the next steps of the cycle.

Marcus remained at the Polytechnic Institute for several years, becoming an associate professor in 1954 and a full professor in 1958, before moving to the University of Illinois in 1964. He arrived at Caltech as the Arthur Amos Noyes Professor in 1978 and became the John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry in 2013.

In 1992, more than 35 years after he started working on electron transfer, Marcus was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his contributions to the theory of electron transfer reactions in chemical systems," according to the prize citation.

In his speech at Marcus's Nobel Prize award ceremony, Lennart Eberson of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences addressed Marcus, saying, "Your theory is a unifying factor in chemistry, promoting understanding of electron-transfer reactions of biochemical, photochemical, inorganic, and organic nature and thereby contributing to science as a whole."

"The importance of Rudy Marcus's theory of electron transfer cannot be overstated. It provides a simple theoretical framework for one of the most fundamental processes in chemistry and has been applied to understand reactions ranging from small-molecule catalysis to complex biological systems," says Sarah Reisman, Bren Professor of Chemistry and the Norman Davidson Leadership Chair of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) at Caltech. "Rudy was a brilliant scientist and a devoted mentor who remained active and present in the division until just recently. We will miss Rudy and the genuine curiosity he brought to his work."

Longtime colleague Shaul Mukamel, a distinguished professor at UC Irvine, said Marcus combined extraordinary talents including high physical intuition and the ability to develop simple models that capture the essence of complex molecular processes and unravel their mechanisms. "Rudy had unusual curiosity and penetrating depth and enthusiasm," says Mukamel. "He truly loved science and continued to work on new problems and carry out elaborate calculations until his last days."

In 2024, the Institute established the Rudolph A. Marcus Center for Theoretical Chemistry at Caltech in his honor. The center—endowed by two former postdoctoral scholars, Mary Luo and her husband, Jack Zhang, who was mentored by Marcus—was designed to help attract and support the most talented and driven faculty, postdocs, and students to CCE.

"Professor Marcus was an extraordinary scientist whose brilliance, humility, and generosity touched so many lives. We are honored to have known him and to help preserve his legacy through the Rudolph A. Marcus Center for Theoretical Chemistry," Zhang and Luo said in a written statement.

"Rudy was an intellectual giant. His ability to capture complex phenomena with simple physical models was legendary, most notably with his theory of electron transfer, which established his status as one of the greatest pencil-and-paper theorists in chemistry. Admired by the field, cherished by his colleagues, and publishing scientific papers well past his 100th year, he was an inspiration to us all. He will be sorely missed," says Garnet Chan, Bren Professor of Chemistry and director of the Marcus Center.

Among many honors, Marcus was the recipient of the National Medal of Science in 1989, the Irving Langmuir and the Peter Debye Awards of the American Chemical Society in 1978 and 1988, respectively, and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 1984–85. Marcus was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was a foreign member of the Royal Society of London and the Chinese Academy of Sciences; a foreign fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; an honorary academician of Taiwan's Academia Sinica; and an honorary member of the European Academy of Sciences. He was also a member of the American Philosophical Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Chemical Society, and held honorary doctorates from 18 universities in the United States and abroad.

Living in California presented Rudy with the added benefit of pursuing two of his favorite activities, playing tennis and downhill skiing, both of which he did well into his 80s! He also had a passion for music and history.

Marcus was predeceased by Laura (1922-2003), his beloved wife whom he adored throughout their 54 years of marriage. He is survived by his sons Alan, Kenneth, and Raymond, for whom Rudy was a constant inspiration, as well as their spouses Christine, Jennifer, and daughter-in-law Barbara; and his long-term colleague and companion, Prof. Maria-Elizabeth Michel-Beyerle. He was much loved by his four grandchildren, Sara (and her husband, Joshua), David, Lev, and Benjamin, and his great-grandson, Theo.
