On Wednesday, August 26, Caltech Vice Provost Mory Gharib welcomed 80 mostly high school-age young people who were at Caltech for a U.S. Citizenship ceremony. The ceremony, which was organized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and hosted by Caltech, recognizes young people who obtained citizenship through their parents.
On September 1, Guruswami Ravichandran, the John E. Goode, Jr., Professor of Aerospace and professor of mechanical engineering, will become the new chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science.
After serving the last six years as the dean of graduate studies, Joseph Shepherd (PhD '81), the C. L. "Kelly" Johnson Professor of Aeronautics and professor of mechanical engineering, is taking on a new leadership role as the vice president for student affairs.
The Gates-Thomas Laboratory, a renovated building that will house Caltech's Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering, will provide generations of students and researchers access to state-of-the-art laboratories and experimental and computational facilities, as well as to areas for interdisciplinary work.
