This summer, several undergraduate students at Caltech had the opportunity to help optimize a promising technique that can make tissues and organs—even entire organisms—transparent for study. As part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, these students worked in the lab of Assistant Professor of Biology Viviana Gradinaru, where researchers are developing such so-called clearing techniques that make it possible to peer straight through normally opaque tissues rather than seeing them only as thinly sectioned slices that have been pieced back together.

The SURF program supports students from Caltech and other universities while they participate in real laboratory research on campus. Since the program's inception in 1979, more than 6,200 students have SURFed.

Xie Chen comes to Caltech after a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley. Originally from China, Chen received her BS from Tsinghua University in Beijing and her PhD from MIT. She recently discussed with us her research interests and ambitions for her Caltech career.

Konstantin Batygin recently joined the Caltech faculty as assistant professor of planetary science, following graduate school at Caltech (PhD '12) and a postdoc at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Batygin shares the string of synchronicities that brought him to planetary astrophysics and to Caltech.

Caltech students have collected an array of awards this spring, including two Fulbright grants, a Watson Fellowship, three Goldwater Scholarships, an American-Scandinavian Fellowship, six DOD graduate fellowships, Caltech's San Pietro and Bishop Prizes, and 34 NSF Fellowships.
