Today Caltech announced the appointment of Thomas F. Rosenbaum as the Institute's ninth president. Dr. Rosenbaum is currently the John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor of Physics and provost at the University of Chicago.

Albert D. "Bud" Wheelon, a life member of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), passed away at his home in Montecito, California, on September 27. He was 84 years old.

With a $10 million gift, the Los Angeles–based Otis Booth Foundation has created and endowed the Otis Booth Leadership Chair for the Division of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS) at Caltech. This endowment will provide a permanent source of funds to foster novel research ventures and educational programs.

This morning the Caltech Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to appoint Edward Stolper to the role of interim president, effective July 1, 2013. He will assume the post from Jean-Lou Chameau, whose last day as president of Caltech will be June 30, 2013.

Aerospace leader David W. Thompson (MS '78) has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology. A National Medal of Technology–winner, Thompson founded Orbital Sciences Corporation four years after he graduated from Caltech with a degree in aeronautics.

Entrepreneur Kevin M. Taweel has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Taweel is cofounder and chairman of Asurion, the world's largest provider of technology protection services.

David L. Lee (PhD '74) has been named the new chair of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). A Caltech trustee since 2000, Lee began his term as chair October 27, 2012. As chair, Lee will foster communication with Caltech faculty, administration, and students and represent the Board with the Caltech community and the public. He will preside at board meetings and offer advice and support to the president of Caltech. Lee succeeds Kent Kresa, who has served as chair since 2005.

Get ready to drop, cover, and hold on! On Thursday, October 18, Caltech will once again participate in the Great California ShakeOut, the annual statewide earthquake-preparedness drill. Caltech students, faculty, staff, and visitors are encouraged to join the more than 8 million Californians who will have the opportunity to practice how to protect themselves during an earthquake.
