Researchers from Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have provided a global observational study of the effect that changes in aerosol levels have on low-level marine clouds—the clouds that have the largest impact on the amount of incoming sunlight that Earth reflects back into space.
"Traditional research has studied autism as a genetic disorder and a disorder of the brain, but our work shows that gut bacteria may contribute to ASD-like symptoms in ways that were previously unappreciated," says Sarkis Mazmanian.
"Our group is interested in the chemical transformations that are relevant to feeding and fueling the planet. There are two efforts on this campus in artificial photosynthesis, and I participate in both."
Today Caltech announced the appointment of Thomas F. Rosenbaum as the Institute's ninth president. Dr. Rosenbaum is currently the John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor of Physics and provost at the University of Chicago.
The industrial technique used to make nitrogen fertilizers mirrors the natural process of nitrogen fixation but requires high heat and pressure. Researchers at Caltech have synthesized a catalyst that allows for nitrogen fixation under much milder conditions.
The Rosen Center supports bioengineering research through the funding of fellows and faculty from many disciplines, including applied physics, chemical engineering, synthetic biology, and computer science.
The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation has recognized Thomas F. Miller, professor of chemistry, with a 2013 Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, which provides a $75,000 unrestricted research grant.
