Soils are multiphase granular materials; their complex behavior challenges the analysis of natural systems and engineering design. The presentation includes historical highlights in the development of soil mechanics, an analysis of underlying phenomena at the particle/pore scale, and selected examples of coupled thermo-hydro-bio-chemo-mechanical processes that arise in the context of energy geotechnology.
