The analysis of large, complex, and high dimensional data sets is one of the  fundamental intellectual problems faced by computational scientists.  Over the last ten years, methods originating within topology (the mathematical study of shape) have been developed which provide approaches to the automatic organization of data sets as well as methods for working with data sets whose data points themselves have shape like content, such as databases of compounds.  We will discuss these methods, and give examples.
