Heterogeneous Photochemistry and Interfacial Redox Processes of Environmental Significance

Heterogeneous redox processes are critically important in both natural environmental processes and diverse remediation technologies. Various environmental redox processes are initiated on the surface of various metal oxides and metals. For example, the interfacial electron transfers occurring on semiconductor oxides and zero-valent iron have been extensively investigated for their applications to the redox conversion of aquatic pollutants whereas the photoreductive dissolution of iron oxides has been also frequently investigated to understand the iron redox cycle. In this talk, selected examples of heterogeneous redox processes of environmental significance will be introduced and discussed, which include (1) the solar-driven redox transformation of aquatic pollutants on semiconductor oxides, (2) electron transfer mediation and the generation of reactive oxygen species on the surface of zero-valent iron, and (3) the dissolution of iron oxides and the inorganic redox conversion in ice matrix.
