Caltech Goes for Three in a Row
After winning back-to-back games for the first time in 13 years, the Caltech men's basketball team has a chance to make history again with a victory on Saturday. The Beavers face the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz at 3:00 p.m. in Braun Gym, as part of the SCIAC Classic. All Techers are encouraged to come and support their team.
Three wins would give Caltech, now at 2-5, its best season since 1996–1997, when the team went 3-17. Three in a row would also be the largest win streak since the 1994–1995 season when they won six in a row and finished at 8-15.
But it won't be easy. Caltech played UC Santa Cruz just two weeks ago and lost 79-64. Still, the game was closer than the final score might indicate, as it went back and forth throughout the contest, said head coach Oliver Eslinger. Mistakes in the second half cost them the game.
Lately, Caltech basketball has been making headlines. On Monday, they beat Eastern Nazarene in convincing fashion, 87-53, after having defeated American Sports University a week prior, breaking a 44-game losing streak. Leading the way has been senior Ryan Elmquist, who was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 10. The Beavers even made national news when they were featured in The New York Times on Thursday's sports page.
